on passage from Barry to New York in ballast, torpedoed by U 57 about two hundred miles south-west of the Fastnet; most of the crew drowned. The Relief Commission did not hear of it until 3 February, and put it to the German government that it had happened before the expiry of the very period they had themselves declared safe
